Fremont H.S. in what was considered to be one of the most high risk areas of the city (South central L.A.) during a most fragile time of the civil rights era. His father was always by his side keeping both the CRIPS and the BLOODS (local gangs) at bay and his mentoring set in motion values that laid the solid foundation for his life. Upon graduating from high school he joined the Air Force to seek out his dream of becoming a jet fi ghter pilot. His initial responsibility was as an intelligence technician trained as an imagery interpreter and cartographic specialist. After serving seven and a half years in the USAF, he applied for and received a rare inter-service transfer to the U.S. Army to attend Army Flight School. Though a little short of becoming a jet fi ghter Pilot, he logged over 1000 hours of fl ight time in the HUEY, COBRA, KIOWA, and the TH- 55 (trainer) over the next six years as a combat and medical evacuation pilot. In 1987 following a Congressional Reduction in Forces, (RIF) he left the service. As an Entrepreneur he became the fi rst minority in the country to own and operate a scrap tire and recycling facility and processed nearly 2.5 million tires over a fi ve year period into valuable products for consumers . As a member of the Georgia Army National Guard, he was called to duty from 2006 to 2008 to support the Border Mission in the New Mexico/ El Paso sectors. The father of six girls and four boys and the proud grandfather of twenty-one grandchildren he now focuses on getting into print the legacy of his father's magnifi cent works of poetry and writings.

Book excerpt: From Mourning to Praise approaches the subject of suffering and loss the way the Bible approaches it: with honesty. Regardless of how our experiences differ, you can know that God continues to love you and care for you. The purpose of this book is to show you how to plead your case before God during suffering. It will teach you how to seek Gods face in your dark hours. Then when God brings you to a place where you begin to discern his deeper work in your life, it will teach you how to offer meaningful praise for what he has taught you. Finally it will introduce you to one of the greatest blessings of suffering, the opportunity to reach out to others who experience suffering or loss. Here are some of the points that this book affirms: God cares when you suffer. God is with you when you suffer. The Bible gives you permission to throw aside your happy mask when you suffer. You have a right to complain about injustice and plead to God for justice. You have the freedom to be angry with Godout loud. God uses suffering to produce growth and character depth. Suffering produces deeper character than any pleasure can produce. Worship from a position of suffering can be far more meaningful than worship that is always happy. Drawing on the reality from the book of Job, the Psalms, and from the New Testament, From Mourning to Praise invites you to grieve Gods way while you wait for his deliverance.

Book excerpt: Almost twenty years ago I had written a book with the same concept as this one - I am proud to say this version of the book is the first times infinity! The original book was titled "Rhyme and Reason - A Rhyming Book on Rhyming". To summarize, the book is about the concept and use of rhyming - and the fun part about it is that more than half of the book actually rhymes! Along with being a writer, I am also a lyricist, a free-style'er, and a poet. I have taken my over-twenty-years experience within the realm of rhyming and condensed it into a breakdown of what rhyming does and can mean to us as people and how they can help us understand the nature behind words, as they can be seen as people themselves in a way. My chapters include... "Symmetry in Poetry" (an interesting look at visualizing rhymes), "Child Like" (our early-life introduction to rhymes), "Love of Love Poetry" (the romantic nature of rhyming), and "Rhyming's Raison D'être" (a collection of rhyming structures plus some of my own personal song lyrics). We enter a rhyming center where all sounds of words are stored in a scepter - the book you now read the back of is all their intercepter except for the way you choose to interpret 'em. And at the end of reading this... Enter rhythm! I mean, it is a given that we give in to the rhythm givin' rhythms to these rhyming hymns. We see the palm trees and feel a calm breeze as the psalms sing and we know what alms bring... What you hold in your palms ring with a truth that was once understood by a Soothsayer's sweet tooth. As a Master Stenographer and a Poet, I've taken both worlds and used them to strategically break down the very heart of rhyming in all its glory and everything in between. So, enjoy a story that will sing in a scene that you will have seen and are seein'.

Book excerpt: Nursery rhymes have been told to children for centuries. Many people think that they are just meant to make children smile. However, preschool children's awareness of rhyme and alliteration has an important influence on their success in learning to read and to spell. In Rhyme and Reason in Reading and Spelling, the authors explore this causal hypothesis using a new research design of combining longitudinal methods with intervention, and they provide strong evidence to show that there is a positive relationship between recognizing similar sounds, as found in nursery rhymes, and learning to read and to spell. The authors also investigate the relationship of this skill to children's learning difficulties. This is the first volume in the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities Monograph series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of such global bestsellers as Lolita and Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) is also one of the most controversial literary translators and translation theorists of modern time. In Between Rhyme and Reason, Stanislav Shvabrin discloses the complexity, nuance, and contradictions behind Nabokov's theory and practice of literalism to reveal how and why translation came to matter to Nabokov so much. Drawing on familiar as well as unknown materials, Shvabrin traces the surprising and largely unknown trajectory of Nabokov's lifelong fascination with translation to demonstrate that, for Nabokov, translation was a form of intellectual communion with his peers across no fewer than six languages. Empowered by Mikhail Bakhtin's insights into the interactive roots of literary creativity, Shvabrin's interpretative chronicle of Nabokov's involvement with translation shows how his dialogic encounters with others in the medium of translation left verbal vestiges on his own creations. Refusing to regard translation as a form of individual expression, Nabokov translated to communicate with his interlocutors, whose words and images continue to reverberate throughout his allusion-rich texts.

Book excerpt: This unusual book takes the form of a dialogue between a linguist and another scientist. This unusual book takes the form of a dialogue between a linguist and another scientist. The dialogue takes place over six days, with each day devoted to a particular topic--and the ensuing digressions. The role of the linguist is to present the fundamentals of the minimalist program of contemporary generative grammar. Although the linguist serves essentially as a voice for Noam Chomsky's ideas, he is not intended to be a portrait of Chomsky himself. The other scientist functions as a kind of devil's advocate, making the arguments that linguists tend to face from those in the "harder" sciences. The author does far more than simply present the minimalist program. He conducts a running argument over the status of theoretical linguistics as a natural science. He raises the general issues of how we conceive words, phrases, and transformations, and what these processes tell us about the human mind. He also attempts to reconcile generative grammar with the punctuated equilibrium version of evolutionary theory. In his foreword, Massimo Piatelli-Palmarini says, "The vast number of readers who have been enthralled by Goedel, Escher, Bach may well like also this syntactic companion, a sort of 'Chomsky, Fibonacci, Bach.'".
