Book excerpt: When Breeze FM, a radio station in the provincial Zambian town of Chipata, hired an elderly retired schoolteacher in 2003, no one anticipated the skyrocketing success that would follow. A self-styled grandfather on air, Gogo Breeze seeks intimacy over the airwaves and dispenses advice on a wide variety of grievances and transgressions. Multiple voices are broadcast and juxtaposed through call-ins and dialogue, but free speech finds its ally in the radio elder who, by allowing people to be heard and supporting their claims, reminds authorities of their obligations toward the disaffected. Harri Englund provides a masterfully detailed study of this popular radio personality that addresses broad questions of free speech in Zambia and beyond. By drawing on ethnographic insights into political communication, Englund presents multivocal morality as an alternative to dominant Euro-American perspectives, displacing the simplistic notion of voice as individual personal property—an idea common in both policy and activist rhetoric. Instead, Englund focuses on the creativity and polyphony of Zambian radio while raising important questions about hierarchy, elderhood, and ethics in the public sphere. A lively, engaging portrait of an extraordinary personality, Gogo Breeze will interest Africanists, scholars of radio and mass media, and anyone interested in the history and future of free speech.

Download Surrender Tomorrow in PDF by Alphonso Johnson Full Book and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel, Surrender Tomorrow, is about a long bus trip where people are shown who they really are. They are upwardly mobile blacks who do not always make the best decisions. One of the main characters is Francois, who has one foot in the crime world and the other in the legit one. Francois has family that he has to impress, like his father, back home in Orlando, Florida, who look up to him. However, the mob is chasing him, and they are curious bunch with funny names like Cool Breeze from the old Blaxploitation movies from the seventies. And there is Surrender Tomorrow herself, who is a real woman, but you are never sure if she is not mobbed up. This novel started out by being a book of short stories. Right when you think you figured out who Francoiss father is and his involvement with a young woman, you get pulled right back into the caper. It is a ride of sorts that, when you read about crimes happening, one seldom guesses the characters. These are the characters, and they are a comical bunch. It goes to show how Francoiss family comes to grips with having a son who might be doing the wrong thing and traditional folkways of new immigrants migrating to America. For some people, they are willing to risk all for love, others money.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized around "The Canticle of the Creatures" by St. Francis of Assisi, Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire is the first book to consider the ways in which praying with the natural elements can enliven Christian spiritual life. Teacher, artist, and Benedictine oblate Christine Valters Paintner offers concrete suggestions and guided contemplative exercises; for instance, she suggests that readers take time to "watch the sunrise or sunset and breathe in the beauty of the fiery sky. Contemplate what those beginnings and endings have to say in your own life." Readers benefit from Paintner's extensive training in theology and Benedictine spirituality, as well as her unique work in bringing the expressive arts to spiritual direction.
