Download Creation and Chaos in PDF by JoAnn Scurlock Full Book and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermann Gunkel was a scholar in the generation of the origins of Assyriology, the spectacular discovery by George Smith of fragments of the “Chaldean Genesis,” and the Babel-Bibel debate. Gunkel’s thesis, inspired by materials supplied to him by the Assyriologist Heinrich Zimmern, was to take the Chaoskampf motif of Revelation as an event that would not only occur at the end of the world but had already happened at the beginning, before Creation. In other words, in this theory, one imagines God in Genesis 1 as first having battled Rahab, Leviathan, and Yam (the forces of Chaos) in a grand battle, and only then beginning to create. The problem with Gunkel’s theory is that it did not simply identify common elements in the mythologies of the ancient Near East but imposed upon them a structure dictating the relationships between the elements, a structure that was based on inadequate knowledge and a forced interpretation of his sources. On the other hand, one is not entitled to insist that there was no cultural conversation among peoples who spent the better part of several millennia trading with, fighting, and conquering one another. Creation and Chaos attempts to address some of these issues. The contributions are organized into five sections that address various aspects of the issues raised by Gunekl’s theories.

Download Desire proper is being in PDF by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky Full Book and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desire slumbers alone in the bosom of Eternal Truth. Out of Wind enamoured with Chaos, Pothos is born. Brahma soliloquizes in consternation: Who am I? Whence came I? The pregenetic or precosmic Triad is a pure metaphysical abstraction. As fragrance affects the mind from its proximity merely, and not from any immediate operation upon mind itself, so the Supreme influences the elements of creation. Will is the Desire to be, and to become. Then Desire awakens and polarises Spirit and Matter, the two opposing forces which are inseparable, interdependent, and readily convertible into each other. Polarisation is the outcome of a conscious apostasis of Spirit from a state of Unconscious Subjectivity, marking a period of self-reflection through the “objectivity” of Matter (illegitimate marriage) with the promise and hope of the two becoming one again (true marriage) and re-ascend (be resurrected) to their heavenly abode. In the World of Being, in between each and every pair of opposites there is a Point of Impartiality or Not-Being. This is Third Logos, the Heavenly Man, Conscious Universal Mind.
Download Divine Presence in PDF by Mark G. Boyer Full Book and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The glory of the LORD," a phrase used over one hundred times in the Bible, describes God's greatness and transcendence. This complex theological concept exhibits several natural elements which describe a theophany, a personification of God in the forces of nature. Thus, a theophany--the appearance of God in a visible form--is the physical manifestation of the divine presence most frequently associated with a storm. Of all the biblical accounts that illustrate the glory of the LORD, the narrative of Moses' encounter with God on Mount Sinai (Horeb) contains nineteen of the twenty-one elements that reveal the glory of the LORD: mountains, sacred numbers, God's voice, people's (person's) response, cloud, water, thunder, lightning, trumpet blast, smoke, fire, earthquake, terms of the event (covenant), sign, transformation of witnesses, altar, feast (meal), wind, light and darkness, jewels (precious stones), and dreams. Each element is examined closely using biblical texts that best illustrate it.
Download The Trinity and Theodicy in PDF by Jacob H. Friesenhahn Full Book and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does God permit the great suffering and evil that we see in our world? This basic question of human existence receives a fresh answer in this book as the mystery of evil is explored in the context of the mystery of the Trinity. God's permission of evil and the way in which suffering can lead human persons into the life of the Trinity are discussed in dialogue with the great Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar. In the light of Balthasar's model of the Trinity as divine self-giving love, we gain a profound grasp of the nature of suffering in human life by placing our suffering in the context of the divine life of the Triune God.
Download The Historians' History of the World Vol.1 (of 25) (Illustrations) in PDF by Henry Smith Williams Full Book and published by THE TROW PRESS. This book was released on with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete world history should, properly speaking, begin with the creation of the world as man’s habitat, and should trace every step of human progress from the time when man first appeared on the globe. Unfortunately, the knowledge of to-day does not permit us to follow this theoretical obligation. We now know that the gaps in the history of human evolution as accessible to us to-day, vastly exceed the recorded chapters; that, in short, the period with which history proper has, at present, to content itself, is a mere moment in comparison with the vast reaches of time which, in recognition of our ignorance, we term “prehistoric.” But this recognition of limitations of our knowledge is a quite recent growth—no older, indeed, than a half century. Prior to 1859 the people of Christendom rested secure in the supposition that the chronology of man’s history was fully known, from the very year of his creation. One has but to turn to the first chapter of Genesis to find in the margin the date 4004 B.C., recorded with all confidence as the year of man’s first appearance on the globe. One finds there, too, a brief but comprehensive account of the manner of his appearance, as well as of the creation of the earth itself, his abiding-place. Until about half a century ago, as has just been said, the peoples of our portion of the globe rested secure in the supposition that this record and this date were a part of our definite knowledge of man’s history. Therefore, one finds the writers of general histories of the earlier days of the nineteenth century beginning their accounts with the creation of man, B.C. 4004, and coming on down to date with a full and seemingly secure chronology. Our knowledge of the world and of man’s history has come on by leaps and bounds since then, with the curious result that to-day no one thinks of making any reference to the exact date of the beginnings of human history,—unless, indeed, it be to remark that it probably reaches back some hundreds of thousands of years. The historian can speak of dates anterior to 4004 B.C., to be sure. The Egyptologist is disposed to date the building of the Pyramids a full thousand years earlier than that. And the Assyriologist is learning to speak of the state of civilisation in Chaldea some 6000 or 7000 years B.C. with a certain measure of confidence. But he no longer thinks of these dates as standing anywhere near the beginning of history. He knows that man in that age, in the centres of progress, had attained a high stage of civilisation, and he feels sure that there were some thousands of centuries of earlier time, during which man was slowly climbing through savagery and barbarism, of which we have only the most fragmentary record. He does not pretend to know anything, except by inference, of the “dawnings of civilisation.” Whichever way he turns in the centres of progress, such as China, Egypt, Chaldea, India, he finds the earliest accessible records, covering at best a period of only eight or ten thousand years, giving evidence of a civilisation already far advanced. Of the exact origin of any one of the civilisations with which he deals he knows absolutely nothing. “The Creation of Man,” with its fixed chronology, is a chapter that has vanished from our modern histories. To be continue in this ebook...

Download When the Dragon Wore the Crown in PDF by Cerow, Don Full Book and published by Nicolas-Hays, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When our ancestors gazed upon the skies thousands of years ago they looked up into the center of Creation and saw a mighty Dragon, a great celestial serpent with wings circling ceaselessly above them, night after night, century after century. When the Dragon Wore the Crown is a ground breaking book that covers a period of over six thousand years, focusing on what astrologers would call the Ages of Gemini, Taurus and Aries and taking us through the period of classical astronomy with the Greeks and Romans (approx. 7000 BC-200 AD). When the Dragon Wore the Crown opens and closes with the Chinese mythological tradition and touches on Sumerian, Babylonian, Phoenician, Hindu, Norse, Native American and even Mayan myths, weaving together many of their celestial serpentine similarities. It focuses primarily on the role of the constellation Draco, the astronomical marker of the North Celestial Pole for literally thousands of years. The importance of this simple astronomical observation helped facilitate the study of the calendar, navigation, farming and social organization. The circuit of the seasons was marked by this cadence with the moving center guarding the position of the zodiacal circle for literally thousands of years. The secret of the circle was hidden in its center. The one had to be determined before the other. If the true center was not accurately observed and determined, the entire circle was off. This is a beautiful and informative book of discovery, following the mythology of various cultures as it evolved into modern astronomy.
Download Q 6:20-21 in PDF by Thomas Hieke Full Book and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth volume in the series Documenta Q is concerned with the reconstruction of the Q text behind Luke 6:20-21 par. Matt 5:2-3,6. The International Q Project's presentation of the critical text of Q 6:20-21, together with the exhaustive history of research on which it is based, will enhance considerable research in the Sayings Gospel Q, the historical Jesus, and New Testament theology. According to Q, Jesus' first words in his public ministry are the beatitudes for the poor, hungry, and mourning. This shows the weight and importance these words carry in the Jesus tradition. There is also a wide consensus that these three beatitudes probably go back to the historical Jesus. This could be one reason for the prominent place these verses have in Q: at the beginning of Jesus' inaugural sermon. They are certainly one of the core sayings of Jesus' message about the kingdom of God. The database and evaluations are an expanded and revised version of those presented and discussed at the meeting of the International Q Project in Claremont, CA 1991. Just prior to the bibliography at the conclusion of the volume the resultant critical text of Q 6:20-21 is printed. This Greek text is followed by English, German and French translations. (Lucan chapter and verse numeration is used as a convenience and a mere convention.)
