Download Puerto Rican Chicago in PDF by Mirelsie Velazquez Full Book and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The postwar migration of Puerto Rican men and women to Chicago brought thousands of their children into city schools. These children's classroom experience continued the colonial project begun in their homeland, where American ideologies had dominated Puerto Rican education since the island became a US territory. Mirelsie Velázquez tells how Chicago's Puerto Ricans pursued their educational needs in a society that constantly reminded them of their status as second-class citizens. Communities organized a media culture that addressed their concerns while creating and affirming Puerto Rican identities. Education also offered women the only venue to exercise power, and they parlayed their positions to take lead roles in activist and political circles. In time, a politicized Puerto Rican community gave voice to a previously silenced group--and highlighted that colonialism does not end when immigrants live among their colonizers. A perceptive look at big-city community building, Puerto Rican Chicago reveals the links between justice in education and a people's claim to space in their new home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of colonialism and empire have increasingly drawn attention to the problem of conceptualizing the political logic of colonial projects and the circumstances of state formation in colonial contexts. However, the nature and workings of the colonial state remains under-theorized and under-analysed. This volume addresses the analytical challenges of the colonial state from a variety of theoretical and thematic angles, and across a range of empirical cases that stretch over a vast span historically and geographically, to provide a new approach to analyzing the colonial state and its governmental practices.

Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, American teachers descended on the Philippines, which had been newly purchased by the U.S. at the end of the Spanish-American War. Motivated by President McKinley’s project of “benevolent assimilation,” they established a school system that centered on English language and American literature to advance the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon tradition, which was held up as justification for the U.S.’s civilizing mission and offered as a promise of moral uplift and political advancement. Meanwhile, on American soil, the field of American literature was just being developed and fundamentally, though invisibly, defined by this new, extraterritorial expansion. Drawing on a wealth of material, including historical records, governmental documents from the War Department and the Bureau of Insular Affairs, curriculum guides, memoirs of American teachers in the Philippines, and 19th century literature, Meg Wesling not only links empire with education, but also demonstrates that the rearticulation of American literary studies through the imperial occupation in the Philippines served to actually define and strengthen the field. Empire’s Proxy boldly argues that the practical and ideological work of colonial dominance figured into the emergence of the field of American literature, and that the consolidation of a canon of American literature was intertwined with the administrative and intellectual tasks of colonial management.

Book excerpt: Demographers predict that by the end of the century Spanish-speaking persons will constitute the largest minority group in the United States--in this context, bilingual education must be considered a crucial issue for educators and policymakers at the state, national, and local levels. Professors Cafferty and Rivera-Martínez analyze bilingual education policies and programs, particularly as they affect the Puerto Rican child, and reach some startling conclusions. They find that these programs do not, despite the best intentions, offer the equal opportunity and social mobility that has been their purpose. While the authors attempt to neither examine nor define the general problem of bilingual education methodology, they do address the problem of educating the Puerto Rican child as one minority among many. They suggest alternatives for solving the problem and recommend specific policies for federal, state, and local governments attempting to integrate Spanish-speaking minorities into the educational process.

This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Manual For The Public Schools Of Puerto Rico The purpose of this Manual is to place in the hands of the teachers and school officials of this Island a brief account in Spanish of the educational thought and literature and of the system of school organization at present prevailing in the United States. Investigation showed that this could be done more economically through a publication issued by this office than by the translation of several already existing educational works. Of course such a compendium cannot be exhaustive. Many chapters are largely compilations. The educational literature and the official reports of the States and, to some extent, of Europe, have been drawn upon so far as they were available in the library hastily gathered together by this department during the last few months. Our indebtedness to these works is too broad to make practicable a special acknowledgment in each individual instance. Defects, omissions, and repetitions will doubtless appear even to the cursory reader. The book has been dictated with many interruptions, in the midst of the multitude of other office duties attending the reorganization of the school system of this Island. The publication of the book in New York city has rendered it impossible for us to revise the proofs. Literary features and finish have been subordinated to the urgent practical demands of the situation here.
