Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares the Jesus traditions in Paul's genuine letters to the synoptic Jesus tradition. The aim is to identify parallels between Jesus traditions in the Pauline letters and synoptic Gospels and to determine whether the wording of the Pauline Jesus traditions is closer to any particular synoptic Gospel or Q. Paul's quotes of words of the Lord (1 Cor 7:10–11; 9:14; 11:23–25) as well as possible allusions to Jesus traditions in Paul's letters are investigated and compared to similar synoptic sayings of Jesus. Allusions to Jesus traditions in 1 Thessalonians and Romans are revisited. Special attention is paid to possible allusions in Galatians. The findings show that Paul does make use of Jesus traditions resembling those of the synoptics, particularly the Gospel of Matthew.

Download Sex and the Single Savior in PDF by Dale B. Martin Full Book and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2006 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probing into numerous questions about gender and sexuality, Dale Martin delves into the biblical texts anew and unearths surprising findings. Avoiding preconceptions about ancient sexuality, he explores the ethics of desire and marriage and pays careful attention to the original meanings of words, especially those used as evidence of Paul's opposition to homosexuality. For example, after a remarkably faithful reading of the scriptural texts, Martin concludes that our contemporary obsession with marriage--and the whole search for the "right" sexual relationships--is antithetical to the message of the gospel. In all of these essays, however, Martin argues for engaging Scripture in a way that goes beyond the standard historical-critical questions and the assumptions of textual agency in order to find a faith that has no foundations other than Jesus Christ.

Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will. - Romans 12:2 (NIV) What are your goals in life? What goals should you pursue in your life? Every day you make decisions concerning moral issues. Moral evaluation implies that there is a standard of judgment. Christian ethics is the study of how we live a life that conforms to the will of God. When we look at life from a biblical perspective, our goals, actions, and standards should be the result of asking the question, What is God calling me to do and be? Christian Ethics takes a fresh look at a multitude of ethical issues through the lens of God's Word. This important new resource will help provide guidance into knowing God's will for your life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Giles has been writing on women in the Bible for over forty years. In this book, What the Bible Actually Teaches on Women, he gives the most comprehensive account to date of the competing conclusions to this question and the issues surrounding it. To understand the bitter and divisive debate among evangelicals over the status and ministry of women, it needs to be understood that those who since 1990 have called themselves "complementarians" argue that in creation before the fall God set the man over the woman. Thus, the leadership of the man and the subordination of the woman in the home, the church, and wherever possible in the world (the whole creation) is the God-given ideal that is pleasing to God. It is this "theology" that Kevin Giles deconstructs and shows to be without a biblical foundation. Giles shows that he is fully conversant with the complementarian position and yet is unpersuaded by it. He sees it as an appeal to the Bible to preserve male privilege, similar to the appeals to the Bible to validate slavery and Apartheid; appeals to the Bible made by some of the best Reformed and evangelical biblical scholars, and now seen to be special pleading. Carefully studying the limited number of texts on which complementarians predicate their theology of the sexes, Giles finds not one of them actually teaches what complementarians claim. Furthermore, complementarians too often ignore the texts that are very difficult for them. In this book the ordination of women gets only passing mention. The constant focus is on whether or not the Bible subordinates women to men as an abiding theological principle.

Book excerpt: Reading the books of the Law, the Pentateuch, in their original context is the crucial prerequisite for reading their citation and use in later interpretation, including the New Testament writings, argues Ben Witherington III. Here, he offers pastors, teachers, and students an accessible commentary on the Pentateuch, as well as a reasoned consideration of how these books were heard and read in early Christianity. By reading "forward and backward," Witherington advances the scholarly discussion of intertextuality and opens a new avenue for biblical theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N. T. Wright is widely regarded as the most exciting and influential biblical scholar in the world today. These essays throw a spotlight on his contribution to New Testament theology and interpretation over the past four decades. The structure is three-fold, corresponding to the three areas of classic Jewish theology that Wright views as starting points for discerning the shape of New Testament theology: monotheism, election and eschatology. The result is a book that facilitates a deep appreciation of key areas of current scholarly debate, and of Wright’s distinctive contribution to our understanding of the issues. The contributors are world class scholars, including Richard Hays (Duke), Richard Bauckham (St Andrews, Emeritus), James Dunn (Durham, Emeritus), Michael Gorman (St Mary’s Seminary & University), David Horrell (Exeter), Edith Humphrey (Pittsburgh), Bruce Longenecker (Baylor), Oliver O’Donovan (Oxford, Emeritus), Ben Witherington (Asbury), and others.
