Book excerpt: Secrets from Fale’s past haunt her — and visions of the future might hold the key to her legacy. Having vivid premonitions that come true is unusual, but for Fale it’s part of her routine once she turns eighteen. She has no idea why. When one of those premonitions allows her to save Keron—the guy she loves—their destiny is sealed, and their lives are in great danger. She suspects it has something to do with the sacred key her father entrusted to her as he lay dying. She was eight when she found him brutally beaten and watched him succumb to the injuries. Now hunted by thugs who want to steal the Key of Effailya, Fale and Keron must rely on themselves until two mysterious benefactors offer them protection and answers. Fale needs to protect the Key of Effailya at all costs, but she needs to know who is behind the plot against her. The enemy is powerful and ruthless, and holding the sacred key might kill her like it killed her father. Unless she accepts the magic that courses through her veins and learns how to use it. Before the triumph of evil forces, can Fale rise to the occasion and perform a duty she never knew was hers to carry out? A fast-paced YA fantasy that will have readers racing headfirst through the pages. ★Are you ready to embark on this adventure? One-click, today!★

Download Faulkner and Money in PDF by Jay Watson Full Book and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Ted Atkinson, Gloria J. Burgess, David A. Davis, Sarah E. Gardner, Richard Godden, Ryan Heryford, Robert Jackson, Gavin Jones, Mary A. Knighton, Peter Lurie, John T. Matthews, Myka Tucker-Abramson, Michael Wainwright, Jay Watson, and Michael Zeitlin The matter of money touches a writer's life at every point—in the need to make ends meet; in dealings with agents, editors, publishers, and bookstores; and in the choice of subject matter and the minutiae of imagined worlds. William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha was no exception. The people and communities he wrote about stayed deeply entangled in personal, national, and even global networks of industry, commerce, and finance, as did the author himself. Faulkner's economic biography often followed, but occasionally bucked, the tumultuous economic trends of the twentieth century. The Faulkner met within these pages is among modern literature's most incisive and encyclopedic critics of what one contemporary theorist calls the madness of economic reason. Faulkner and Money brings together a distinguished group of scholars to explore the economic contexts of Faulkner's life and work, to follow the proverbial money toward new insights into the Nobel Laureate and new questions about his art. Essays in this collection address economies of debt and gift giving in Intruder in the Dust; the legacies of commodity fetishism in Sanctuary and of twentieth-century capitalism's financial turn in The Town; the pegging of self-esteem to financial acumen in the career of The Sound and the Fury's Jason Compson; the representational challenges posed by poverty and failure in Faulkner's Frenchman's Bend tales; the economics of regional readership and the Depression-era literary market; the aesthetic, monetary, and psychological rewards of writing for Hollywood; and the author's role as benefactor to an aspiring African American college student in the 1950s.

Includes significant excerpts from landmark freedom of expression cases, including concurring or dissenting opinions where applicable, to help students become active learners of free expression rights Offers critical analysis and alternative perspectives on free expression doctrines to demonstrate that existing doctrine is not necessarily ideal or immutable Includes a global perspective on free expression including a chapter on international and comparative perspectives that helps students see how the values of different cultures influence judicial decisions

Download Spectacular Digital Effects in PDF by Kristen Whissel Full Book and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By developing the concept of the "digital effects emblem," Kristen Whissel contributes a new analytic rubric to cinema studies. An "effects emblem" is a spectacular, computer-generated visual effect that gives stunning expression to a film's key themes. Although they elicit feelings of astonishment and wonder, effects emblems do not interrupt narrative, but are continuous with story and characterization and highlight the narrative stakes of a film. Focusing on spectacular digital visual effects in live-action films made between 1989 and 2011, Whissel identifies and examines four effects emblems: the illusion of gravity-defying vertical movement, massive digital multitudes or "swarms," photorealistic digital creatures, and morphing "plasmatic" figures. Across films such as Avatar, The Matrix, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jurassic Park, Titanic, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, these effects emblems heighten the narrative drama by contrasting power with powerlessness, life with death, freedom with constraint, and the individual with the collective.
