Book excerpt: ‘A restrained poetic vision overshadowed only by MacGill’s passionate hatred of the gombeen men and the grasping Catholic clergy who people its pages’ – Sunday Express ‘Penned with chilling realism, a heartrending transcript from life . . .’ – Cork Examiner Set in the Ireland and Scotland of the early 1900s, and based on real events, The Rat-Pit is the tragic story of Norah Ryan, a devout and intelligent Donegal girl who leaves her homeland after the death of her father hoping to find a better life ‘across the water’. Unable to escape the cycle of grinding poverty, Norah’s fate is further sealed when she becomes pregnant by Alec Morrison, the son of the farmer on whose land she lives and progressive views on social justice, Alec callously abandons her and, too proud to accept his begrudging offer of financial help, she finds herself bitterly ostracised. More than the story of one woman’s decline and death, The Rat-Pit is also a grim and unflinchingly realistic portrayal of the Irish immigrant experience in Scotland, as well as a savage critique of a Church and society that did its best to crush those who could scarcely be more vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Book excerpt: Hormones have a manifold impact upon growth and metabolism. This book focuses upon the molecular biology of fish hormones and their regulation. Chapters dealing with gonadotropin, corticotropin, vasotocin, isotocin, somatolactin, and other hormones are written by an international team of fish physiologists and endocrinologists. In addition, there are chapters that survey a growing literature on the ways hormones are regulated both in terms of their actions and in terms of the gene transcription that leads to their formation. The first two sections of the book covers brain and pituitary hormones and the latter two sections are devoted to other hormones and their regulation. As more and more endocrinologists and physiologists seek to use hormones that are inexpensive, provide for more facile experimental replication, and are less subject to cumbersome regulation, they will turn to the sorts of fish models reviewed in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of hope at a time when just about everyone but Marvin Olasky has lost hope. The topic is poverty and the underclass. The profound truth that Marvin Olasky forces us to confront is that the problems of the underclass are not caused by poverty. Some of them are exacerbated by poverty, but we know that they need not be caused by poverty, for poverty has been the condition of the vast majority of human communities since the dawn of history, and they have for the most part been communities of stable families, nurtured children, and low crime. It is wrong to think that writing checks will end the problems of the underclass, or even reduce them. - Preface.

Download Visual Plague in PDF by Christos Lynteris Full Book and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How epidemic photography during a global pandemic of bubonic plague contributed to the development of modern epidemiology and our concept of the “pandemic.” In Visual Plague, Christos Lynteris examines the emergence of epidemic photography during the third plague pandemic (1894–1959), a global pandemic of bubonic plague that led to over twelve million deaths. Unlike medical photography, epidemic photography was not exclusively, or even primarily, concerned with exposing the patient’s body or medical examinations and operations. Instead, it played a key role in reconceptualizing infectious diseases by visualizing the “pandemic” as a new concept and structure of experience—one that frames and responds to the smallest local outbreak of an infectious disease as an event of global importance and consequence. As the third plague pandemic struck more and more countries, the international circulation of plague photographs in the press generated an unprecedented spectacle of imminent global threat. Nothing contributed to this sense of global interconnectedness, anticipation, and fear more than photography. Exploring the impact of epidemic photography at the time of its emergence, Lynteris highlights its entanglement with colonial politics, epistemologies, and aesthetics, as well as with major shifts in epidemiological thinking and public health practice. He explores the characteristics, uses, and impact of epidemic photography and how it differs from the general corpus of medical photography. The new photography was used not simply to visualize or illustrate a pandemic, but to articulate, respond to, and unsettle key questions of epidemiology and epidemic control, as well as to foster the notion of the “pandemic,” which continues to affect our lives today.

Book excerpt: Autobiography of David Burns, 1928-1949. Book-obsessed childhood in the Depression in a small town in Kentucky; running away from home on his 15th birthday; three years in Washington in Capitol Page School, dropping out many times, never completing first semester of tenth grade; copy boy and photographer's apprentice at The Evening Star newspaper; three years in the Air Force. Managing somehow to be admitted to Princeton. The autobiography is interspersed with four vivid chapters of imaginary ancestors: Long Hunters in 18th century Kentucky; pioneers on The Wilderness Road from Cumberland Gap; building gristmills and sawmills; and the legacy of coal mining… which has left much of Appalachia, land AND people, 'HOLLOWED OUT'.

It explains how dogs train their owners, and debunks the many myths about our four-legged friends - such as the belief that they see in black and white - while investigating the mysteries of canine psychology: what does that guilty face really mean and how come dogs seem to know when we're coming home? This wonderful collection of canine curiosities also explores the place of dogs in the human imagination, from cartoons and literary characters to ghosts and dog-headed saints. The clever dogs, the cute dogs, the bizarre dogs and the devoted, hard-working dogs are all put under scrutiny, giving us even more reasons to utterly adore our canine companions. Drawing on the vast body of knowledge belonging to the world's most famous dogs and cats home, DOGOPEDIA is the ideal present for every dog lover.
