Book excerpt: Inspired by Native American creation tales, these sixteen interconnected stories tell the origin of California’s Sonoma Mountain. In the tradition of Calvino’s Italian Folktales, Greg Sarris, author of the award-winning novel Grand Avenue, turns his attention to his ancestral homeland of Sonoma Mountain in Northern California. In sixteen interconnected original stories, the twin crows Question Woman and Answer Woman take us through a world unlike yet oddly reminiscent of our own: one which blooms bright with poppies, lupines, and clover; one in which Water Bug kidnaps an entire creek; in which songs have the power to enchant; in which Rain is a beautiful woman who keeps people’s memories in stones. Inspired by traditional Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo creation tales, these stories are timeless in their wisdom and beauty, and because of this timelessness their messages are vital and immediate. The figures in these stories ponder the meaning of leadership, of their place within the landscape and their community. In these stories we find a model for how we can all come home again. At once timeless and contemporary, How a Mountain Was Made is equally at home in modern letters as the ancient story cycle. Sarris infuses his stories with a prose stylist’s creativity and inventiveness, moving American Indian literature in an emergent direction. This edition features a reader’s guide that provides thoughtful jumping-off points for discussion. Praise for How a Mountain Was Made “These are charming and wise stories, simply told, to be enjoyed by young and old alike—stories need us if they are to come forth and have life too.” —Kirkus Reviews “Stunning. . . . Neither an arid anthropological text nor another pseudo-Indian as-told-to fabrication. Instead, Sarris has breathed new life into these ancient Northern California tales and legends, lending them a subtle, light-hearted voice and vision.” —Scott Lankford, Los Angeles Review of Books“/I>/DESC> indigenous fiction;native american fiction;indigenous;native american;short stories;short fiction;folk tales;legends;mythology;myth;creation stories;nature;environment;place;sonoma mountain;california FIC059000 FICTION / Indigenous FIC029000 FICTION / Short Stories FIC010000 FICTION / Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Legends & Mythology FIC077000 FICTION / Nature & the Environment 9781597142533 Brother and the Dancer Keenan Norris

Download Commentary on the Song of Songs in PDF by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux Full Book and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – August 20, 1153) was a French abbot and the primary builder of the reforming Cistercian order. The Song of Songs is a book of the Hebrew Bible—one of the megillot (scrolls)—found in the last section of the Tanakh, known as the Ketuvim (or "Writings"). It is also known as Canticle of Canticles or simply Canticles from the Vulgate title Canticum Canticorum (Latin, "Song of Songs"). The protagonists of Song of Songs are a woman (identified in one verse as "the Shulamite") and a man, and the poem suggests movement from courtship to consummation. For instance, the man proclaims: "As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters." The woman answers: "As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste."Additionally, the Song includes a chorus, the "daughters of Jerusalem." (from wikipedia.com) This book contains 43 beautiful sermons that St. Bernard wrote on this book. He interprets the song of songs in reference to the love between God and the soul. God is deeply in love with us, and wills our love in return. This love between the soul and God, which is the most intimate love possible, is expressed in the analogy of bride and bridegroom, where the intimacy of love is especially expressed.

Download Singing the French Revolution in PDF by Laura Mason Full Book and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Mason examines the shifting fortunes of singing as a political gesture to highlight the importance of popular culture to revolutionary politics. Arguing that scholars have overstated the uniformity of revolutionary political culture, Mason uses songwriting and singing practices to reveal its diverse nature. Song performances in the streets, theaters, and clubs of Paris showed how popular culture was invested with new political meaning after 1789, becoming one of the most important means for engaging in revolutionary debate.Throughout the 1790s, French citizens came to recognize the importance of anthems for promoting their interpretations of revolutionary events, and for championing their aspirations for the Revolution. By opening new arenas of cultural activity and demolishing Old Regime aesthetic hierarchies, revolutionaries permitted a larger and infinitely more diverse population to participate in cultural production and exchange, Mason contends. The resulting activism helps explain the urgency with which successive governments sought to impose an official political culture on a heterogeneous and mobilized population. After 1793, song culture was gradually depoliticized as popular classes retreated from public arenas, middle brow culture turned to the strictly entertaining, and official culture became increasingly rigid. At the same time, however, singing practices were invented which formed the foundation for new, activist singing practices in the next century. The legacy of the Revolution, according to Mason, was to bestow new respectability on popular singing, reshaping it from an essentially conservative means of complaint to an instrument of social and political resistance.

These magic-users sling curses and fight dirty—and I avoid battling them at all costs. Besides, I’ve got my own problems to deal with, like figuring out why I’m able to speak with the dead. Since I’d rather not be counted among them, I’d better finish this job and pay my debt to the crime lord. I’m trying to redeem myself, and I’m scared I’ll screw it up. My new friends see something in me, the type of person I want to be but was never allowed to become. Despite the danger I find myself in, I promise to keep them safe and storm the gates of Hell for them if needed. I just hope I don’t slip into my old habits along the way. Danger is on the horizon… Whether it’s the secret government agency breathing down my neck or a coven of rogue wizards bent on revenge, I’ve got my work cut out for me. But something tells me that an even darker force is pulling the strings, and with my friends at my side, we just might stand a chance against it. HEXES AND BONES is the second book of the Magic and Mayhem Series, an action-packed urban fantasy with a snarky, cynical wizard hero, wayward magic, and a tight circle of friends who’ll kick ass first and ask questions later. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its composition, the Song of Songs has fascinated generation upon generation of readers. The words for love expressed in the book have captivated the imagination and have inspired many, in each time and age, to interpret its meaning. Also the Song's love for words - its intricate poetry and its rich and often daring imagery - has caught the attention of its readership. After two centuries of diminished interest in the book, the last two decades have witnessed a remarkable return of scholarly attention for the Song of Songs. In this volume, twenty-nine papers read at the 67th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, July 25-27, 2018), not only bring together the current state of the art, but also sketch new perspectives and future avenues for the study of this shortest but most fascinating book in the Hebrew Bible. Attention is paid, by established and emerging scholars alike, to the Song's origin and development, to its poetic features and metaphors, and to its rich and complex reception history.
